What are the financial requirements for the Thai Marriage Visa?

A foreign husband must show 400,000 THB in a Thai bank account in his own name, seasoned for a minimum of two months, or a monthly income of 40,000 THB. Rules for a foreign wife can be more flexible if the Thai husband can demonstrate he financially supports the household through tax returns or payslips. Requirements vary by office, and we advise verifying your specific situation with us first.

Is a ceremonial wedding sufficient for the visa application?

Accepted Answer

No. Thai immigration recognises only a legal marriage registered at the District Office (Amphur). A Buddhist ceremony, village celebration, or church wedding has no legal standing for immigration purposes. You must hold the Kor Ror 2 (marriage registry) and the Kor Ror 3 (marriage certificate).

What is the Kor Ror 2 and why must it be a fresh copy?

The Kor Ror 2 is the detailed marriage registry ledger held by the district office. Immigration requires an updated printout, typically dated within three to six months, to confirm you are still legally married and have not divorced since your previous extension. A copy from several years ago is not accepted.

What happens if I divorce my Thai spouse?

Accepted Answer

The Marriage Visa is tied to your relationship. Upon divorce, the visa is cancelled technically on the day the divorce is signed at the Amphur. You do not receive a grace period until the stamp expiry date. You must either leave Thailand or transition to a different visa category. We advise clients who anticipate a divorce to contact us in advance to plan a transition.

Does the 400,000 THB need to be in a specific account?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The funds must be held in a Thai bank account registered in the foreigner's name. A joint account with your Thai spouse does not satisfy this requirement, nor does an account held solely in the Thai spouse's name. Immigration requires proof of the foreigner's own financial standing.

What is the "Under Consideration" period?

Unlike Retirement visas, Marriage visa extensions are not approved on the same day. You submit your application and receive an "Under Consideration" stamp valid for 30 days. You then return a month later to collect the final 11-month stamp. This window is used by immigration to verify documents and potentially conduct a home visit.

Will immigration officers visit our home?

Accepted Answer

Home visits are a genuine possibility and not uncommon. Officers may inspect the property, photograph the shared living space, look for evidence of a shared life, and speak with neighbours. Can I convert a Tourist Visa to a Marriage Visa inside Thailand?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If you entered on a Tourist Visa or Visa Exemption, we can convert your status to a Non-Immigrant O Marriage Visa at the immigration office without leaving Thailand, provided you have at least 15 days remaining on your current permission to stay.

What photos are required for the application?

Accepted Answer

Immigration requires photographs that demonstrate a genuine shared life. Specifically: a couple photograph inside the bedroom; inside the living area; in front of the house showing the house number; and eating together. The photographs must show different outfits in some images to indicate different occasions. We provide clients with a detailed shot list.

Does my Thai spouse need to attend the immigration appointment?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Your Thai spouse must be present at both the application appointment and when collecting the final stamp. They are required to bring their national ID card and their house registration book (Tabien Baan) and sign documents in front of the officer.

Can I travel internationally on a Marriage Visa?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but you must purchase a Re-Entry Permit before leaving. Exiting Thailand without one cancels your Marriage Visa immediately and requires you to begin the process again from a tourist visa. A single permit costs 1,000 THB; multiple entry costs 3,800 THB.
