Question 1

Is remote work or digital nomad activity permitted on a Thai Education Visa?

Accepted Answer

Officially, no. The Education Visa prohibits any form of employment or commercial activity, including remote work for foreign clients. If your primary objective is remote work, the DTV (Destination Thailand Visa) is the correct and legally safer option. The DTV was specifically designed for this purpose and offers superior terms.

Question 2

What are the attendance requirements?

Accepted Answer

For Thai language courses, immigration and the Ministry of Education typically require attendance of eight to ten hours per week. Schools submit attendance logs to immigration. Consistent absences are grounds for denial at your 90-day extension. Legitimacy of attendance is verified and cannot be fabricated.

Question 3

How long does the application process take?

Accepted Answer

The process has two distinct stages. First, the school submits your profile to the Ministry of Education for approval, which takes three to four weeks. Second, once the MOE letter is issued, the visa application at immigration or an embassy takes several additional days. Begin the process at least one month before your current permission to stay expires.

Question 4

Can I convert a Tourist Visa to an Education Visa inside Thailand?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If you entered on a Tourist Visa or Visa Exemption, we can convert your status to a Non-Immigrant ED Visa at Hua Hin Immigration Office without leaving Thailand. You generally need at least 15 to 21 days remaining on your current stamp to allow for processing time.

Question 5

How long can I stay in Thailand on an Education Visa?

Accepted Answer

A standard Thai language course visa is valid for one year, but is issued in 90-day stamps rather than a single annual stamp. Every three months you must attend the immigration office to show proof of continued enrolment and extend your stay. The visa can typically be renewed for three to five years by progressing through language levels.

Question 6

Will I be tested on my Thai language ability?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Immigration officers routinely conduct informal assessments during 90-day extension appointments. They may speak to you in basic Thai to verify you are genuinely studying. If you cannot demonstrate any learning progress after several months of classes, they have the right to cancel your visa. We only work with schools that provide genuine instruction.

Question 7

Can I open a Thai bank account on an Education Visa?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Education Visa is classified as a long-term visa, which satisfies the primary requirement for opening a savings account at most major Thai banks. You will typically need your passport, visa stamp, and an enrollment letter from the school.

Question 8

Can I bring dependents on an Education Visa?

Accepted Answer

Generally no, for private language schools. Dependent visas for a spouse or children are not available on a language school ED visa. If you are enrolled at a university or formal higher education institution, dependent visas are possible. Alternatively, if your child holds an ED visa for an international school, you may be eligible for a Non-O Guardian visa.

Question 9

Can I travel internationally while on an Education Visa?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but you must purchase a Re-Entry Permit before leaving Thailand. Exiting without one cancels your ED visa immediately. Frequent extended absences during term time may also be questioned at your next 90-day extension given the attendance requirements.

Question 10

What is the total cost for one year on an Education Visa?

Accepted Answer

Costs vary by school but generally consist of: tuition of 25,000 to 45,000 THB paid to the school; a visa conversion fee of approximately 2,000 THB if converting inside Thailand; and extension fees of 1,900 THB payable to immigration every 90 days. We can provide an itemised estimate based on your preferred school.

Question 11

Is the Education Visa available for Muay Thai training?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a Muay Thai ED visa exists. However, for Muay Thai the DTV (Destination Thailand Visa) is now the strongly preferred route for most people. The DTV offers five-year validity without quarterly 90-day extension appointments, and the application process is generally more straightforward.

Question 12

What happens if I want to cancel the ED Visa before it expires?

Accepted Answer

You must formally cancel the visa at immigration and obtain a cancellation letter from the school confirming your last day of study. Leaving Thailand without formal cancellation can leave you recorded as an active student in the system, which can cause complications and potential fines when you attempt to re-enter or apply for a future visa.
